Technology Matters: Security on the Cloud

We know many businesses have valid concerns about the security of their data

Carlos Oliveira, founder of of Shaping Cloud, explains how cloud computing can help to improve a business' data security.

We know many businesses have valid concerns about the security of their data, privacy and identity when moving from traditionalon premises data servers to the cloud. At Shaping Cloud we manage the processfor our customers and are able to demonstrate that data and data processing onthe cloud is more secure than they can do themselves.

Shaping Cloud is an official Microsoft NetworkPartner, which means we can pass on all the huge benefits of using theMicrosoft Cloud to any size company, from a sole-trader to largestmultinational operation.

In terms of security, all your data is held intriplicate within the data centre so if one of the servers holding your datacrashes, there are still another two versions of it available and a third copywill be reproduced instantly.
The entire data centre is then backed-up to adisaster recovery centre meaning that if the primary centre is compromised(either by power failure or online attack) it is immediately shut down, but youwill be switched over seamlessly to the back-up centre meaning no loss ofservice or revenue.

In addition Microsoft online services and itsdata centres exceed US federal government and international security standards;they also make their compliance certificates available publicly. It is ineveryone’s best interests to provide the best security for their customers.

Internet security will always be an issue andservices are subject to increasingly sophisticated attacks. Businesses may feelmore secure with their servers on site but, in reality if there’s an internetconnection there’s a risk. But Shaping Cloud and our customers can take fulladvantage of the army of people and huge investment (this year alone Microsofthas invested $8.5bn in developing its cloud services) being made to identifyand resolve risks.

Many businesses are already using the cloud intheir day to day activity – Twitter and other social media channels are allhosted on the cloud. Moving your data may seem like a risk but in reality it issafer than hosting it yourself.
